About the book:

The Color of Water by James McBride is a memoir blending his story with that of his white Jewish mother, Ruth McBride Jordan, exploring identity, race, and family through alternating narratives, focusing on her journey from a strict Orthodox Jewish upbringing to marrying a Black minister, raising 12 children in poverty, and instilling values of education, all while James grapples with his biracial heritage and her profound secret past. The book contrasts Ruth’s resilience and selflessness with James’s confusion about his identity, culminating in his realization that “God is the color of water,” a symbol of universal love transcending racial boundaries.
