American painter, writer, teacher, and speaker Riva Lehrer was born with spina bifida and has undergone numerous surgeries throughout her life. Her book, The Golem Girl, is an illustrated memoir of an artist born with disabilities who searches for freedom and connection in a society afraid of strange. Lehrer is well known as both an artist and an activist in the field of Disability Culture.
