Families Like Mine (LGBTQ+)
Families Like Mine is Anshe Emet Synagogue’s community for LGBTQ+ singles, couples and families. We gather periodically for picnics, holidays and other events, and would love for you to join us.
Keep an eye out here to stay up to date on upcoming events!
In honor of the LGBTQ community both inside and outside Anshe Emet Synagogue, we have been celebrating Pride Shabbat for several years, timed to coincide with Chicago’s Pride Parade.
Speakers and guests have included:
Noam Sienna, editor of A Rainbow Thread: An Anthology of Queer Jewish Texts from the First Century to 1969
Abby Stein, transgender writer, educator and activist
Bernard Cherkasov, executive director of Cradles to Crayons
“When we moved to Chicago as a family of three, were delighted by the welcoming and affirming atmosphere of Anshe Emet. As our family grew, so did our connection to Anshe Emet, the clergy, the young family programming, and the dedication to practicing and fostering Jewish values. We are proud to be members of the Anshe Emet community and the synagogue's commitment to inclusion, equity, and justice.”
— Brian Grossman & Malcolm Haar
“As a gender expansive person, I felt not just welcomed, but embraced throughout the JBC program. Each instructor and rabbi met me with kavod, openness, and acceptance, which made me feel comfortable bringing my most authentic, truest self to my experience here at AES. In fact, Rabbi D'ror Chankin-Gould is officiating my wedding this spring!”
