J2M – or Journey to Mitzvot – is a program that prepares our sixth graders and their parents for their Bar/Bat Mitzvah celebration in the following year.
The central goal of J2M is to develop and deepen our students’ understanding of what it means to become a Bar/Bat Mitzvah: a Jewish adult. The pillars of our program are based on a teaching of our ancestors; that our world rests on three things: Torah, Avodah (Prayer), and Gemilut Hasadim (Acts of Loving-kindness).
We gather on 5 Sunday mornings and 1 Friday night throughout the winter months to explore themes of Torah study, prayer, volunteerism and community involvement. We also spend a lot of time introducing families to one another, so that we all get to know more people in our community.

OCTOBER 27 | j2m The First: Come Together, Right Now!
We’ll spend time focusing on gibbush – on building our community, and talking about how this Bar/Bat Mitzvah experience is not a celebration for one day, but rather a life-long journey! We’ll also explore together how we all got to where we are now, and think about what it means for us to become a Bar/Bat Mitzvah. We’ll talk about our hopes for becoming a Jewish adult, and what we expect of ourselves after the Bar/Bat Mitzvah.
NOVEMBER 3 | j2m The Second: I’m Ready to Get Stuff Done and Make Our World Better
We will meet various social action and social justice organizations to see practical examples of “mitzvah” projects, and will talk about how we can start making a difference in our communities.
JANUARY 12 | j2m The Third: Can You Escape the Tefillah Breakout Box?
We will delve deep into some parts of tefillah (prayers), making it a meaningful part of our experience, with a tefillah crash course. Then, we’ll take what we’ve learned and use it to escape the Tefillah Breakout Box!
JANUARY 26 | j2m The Fourth: Torah Treasure Hunt
Using iPhones, the Torah portions, and food, we are going to better understand what the Torah is talking about during the day of your family’s Bar/Bat Mitzvah celebration. Hang on, it’s going to be a wild ride.
FEBRUARY 9 | j2m The Fifth: Now what?
Well folks, we’re coming to the end of the ride. We’ll reflect back on where we started – about journeys, how we’re hoping to change for the better as adults, and what lies ahead in the world of Jewish teenage-hood.
MARCH 13 | j2m The Sixth: Shabbat Service
We will all welcome Shabbat together on a Friday night, sharing a service, food, and words of Torah that our students will have created.
