MAN OF THE YEAR, GILAAD MATAR
Gil and his wife, Robin Mordfin, joined Anshe Emet in the Spring of 2002 after the birth of their daughter, Lilit, and are active members of the Rose Crown Minyan. They are grateful to be part of such a friendly and nurturing Jewish community.
Both Gil and Robin have served as co-chairs of the RCM and their daughter is a past president of SHMUSY. Gil serves as the first coordinator of the Bar/Bat Mitzvah program for RCM and facilitates communication among families, shul leadership and RCM leadership. More than 20 b’nai mitzvah have taken place in RCM, and Gil is very proud that in 2018 we had our First Annual RCM B'nai Mitzvah Alumni service, where our young people assumed every possible role in the Shabbat service.
Gil is actively involved in other local organizations. He is a tireless volunteer for the LINCOLN PARK COMMUNITY SHELTER, where he served as President of the Board of Directors in 2011 and chaired a task force that resulted in a significant expansion of services provided to homeless individuals. In 2009 he started and continues to lead a group of local businesspeople that to date has prepared and served more than nine thousand breakfasts to shelter residents. He also organizes a sack lunch program for the shelter through his Morgan Stanley branch.
The Mordfin-Matar family regularly volunteers for the NIGHT MINISTRY and the JUF UPTOWN CAFE, and also supports the CRIB. Gil coordinates the Streeterville MAOT CHITIM bi-annual holiday food delivery and also served on the board of directors of AKIBA SCHECHTER JEWISH DAY SCHOOL.
Gil participates in Kosher barbecue competitions in Chicago and Philadelphia. He leads the grilling team for the annual RCM summer barbecue and mans the grill with Stanley Dreyfuss for the MEN’S CLUB annual STEAK AND SHOTS IN THE SUKKAH event. For more than 15 years he has hosted an annual whiskey tasting fundraiser which has generated thousands of dollars for ANSHE EMET, MAZON, and the NIGHT MINISTRY.
Gil is Vice President and Senior Portfolio Manager at Morgan Stanley. A member of the LINCOLN PARK CHAMBER OF COMMERCE since 1996, he was Chairman of the Board in 2002 and Businessperson of the Year in 2009.
YOUTH OF THE YEAR, GABRIEL KOSMACHER
Gabe is a senior at JONES COLLEGE PREP HIGH SCHOOL. As a toddler, he attended Shalom Shabbat with his family and has been part of the ANSHE EMET community ever since. Some of his favorite memories are playing endless gaga games at ANSHE EMET’s annual family retreat at CAMP CHI. Continuing his love of sports, Gabe played on SHMUSY’s basketball team for two years. Since 2015, Gabe has been one of the Madrichim at the JOSEPH AND BELLE BRAUN ANSHE EMET RELIGIOUS SCHOOL where he assists with the Little Builder program and tutors students in Hebrew.
Gabe has been running on his high school team for four years, receiving two individual All-City honors and serving as a team mentor. He is a member of his school’s chapter of the NATIONAL HONORS SOCIETY and has also been active with the JEWISH COUNCIL FOR URBAN AFFAIRS. During the summer of his sophomore year he participated in JCUA’s Or Tzedek teen institute for social justice. There, he spent two weeks volunteering across the city of Chicago and learning from a multitude of activists and leaders. Gabe is also a certified lifeguard, working at the PARK RIDGE COUNTRY CLUB over the summer of his senior year. He is looking forward to attending college next year and hopes to major in Applied Mathematics or Economics. Gabe is honored to receive this award and would like to thank the ANSHE EMET community for the many ways in which they have enriched his life.
