Mel was born and raised in Chicago, and, from his many years in real estate development, could tell you how to get anywhere better than anyone.  He was a fantastic athlete and active throughout his long life, enjoying handball, racquetball, tennis and golf.  Mel was a dashing gentleman, a fantastic dancer with a classic crooner’s voice, who took delight in breaking into song to entertain or lighten up any moment.  Mel had a relevant joke for every situation, and retained an impressive catalogue of perfectly-delivered punchlines.

But what greatly defined Mel was the kind word and smile he had for everyone. This is undoubtedly what those who knew him will remember the most.  He was boundlessly-positive, and wished only happiness, good health and success for those close to him.  Mel was “the giving tree,” infinitely-dependable and supportive to those he loved.  The way Mel lived is the response to the age-old question, “What defines success?” Mel Lerman lived an honorable life, and leaves an exemplary legacy for his children and grandchildren.  He will be profoundly missed.

Condolences: Abrahamson, Alvin

It is with deep regret that we inform you of the passing of Alvin Abrahamson, beloved husband of 68 years to Bonnie, devoted father to Rabbi Elka Abrahamson (Rabbi Misha Zinkow) of Columbus, Ohio; Margie of St. Paul, Minnesota; Steven (Ruth) of St. Paul, Minnesota; loving grandfather of Elan (Orly) Zinkow of Chicago, Illinois; Rabb Amir Zinkow of New York, New York; Yael Zinkow (Molly Hoffman) of Los Angeles, California; Maya Zinkow of New York, New York; Emma and Sarah Abrahamson of St. Paul, Minnesota; doting great grandfather to Levi Oz Zinkow; and fond brother of Jack (Joan) Abrahamson.

Al turned 90 in August. He fought a remarkable fight since his heart attack two years ago and thankfully did not suffer too long following a recent fall. He died peacefully in his sleep which is absolutely what he would want and what we wanted. He was a good, good man. Among other things, Al “Lefty” was a serious Jew who drove others to daily minyan, a dedicated milkman who built up his own successful business and worked so hard waking early before the sun every day. He was a fisherman, a championship handball player, a sports fan, a serious lover of ice cream, nice watches, cameras, train rides, pocket knives and office supplies. He was quietly and dutifully charitable, saw much of the world with his wife Bonnie, and was among LL Bean’s most loyal customers - long before it was hipster. But most of all he was a wonderful and ever-proud dad, Saba and Great-Grandpa. He lived a long life and always wanted more. A fighter to the end...a Leo to his core!

In addition to being a loving husband, father and grandfather, Stan, or “Dabs” as he is known to his grandchildren, lived a wonderful, full life. He was blessed with the greenest of thumbs, as evidenced first by stunningly beautiful rose gardens, then full English gardens and culminating with a self-built, climate controlled greenhouse in which he raised rare and exotic orchids. He taught himself to be a photographer, in order to capture the beauty he created, and continued to use his photographic skills to document the many trips he and Katherine took all over the world. As gregarious as they come, he made friends wherever he travelled.

Born in 1927 in St. Louis, Mo., the second son of Polish immigrants, Stan grew up in an Orthodox Jewish home in which Yiddish was the primary language. He enlisted in the U.S Navy in 1945, then graduated from Washington University and married Katherine Klauber in 1953. About Katherine, his wife of fifty-four years, he would often say he was the "luckiest man in the world" and he truly was. He began working for the H.W. Gossard Co., at the time a leading manufacturer and designer of intimate apparel for women, and became one of the top executives at the company, having a hand in designing the first foundation free bra and many other innovative products. He and his beloved Katherine fulfilled a dream by purchasing a home in their most favorite travel destination, Key West, where they spent many warm, sun soaked winters, and Chicago, where they spent the summer months for the sole purpose of being close to their beloved grandchildren. Stanley Goldblatt will be dearly missed by all who loved him and his memory will be a blessing and live on for generations to come.

Rabbi Michael Siegel will officiate at the funeral service on Sunday, October 21st at 12:15pm at Shalom Memorial Funeral Chapel, 1700 W Rand Rd, Arlington Heights.  Interment will follow at Shalom Memorial Park after the service. Shiva will immediately follow at the Goldblatt Residence from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Condolences: Henderson, Michael "Mike" Ray, M.D.

It is with deep regret that we inform you of the recent passing of Dr. Michael “Mike” Ray Henderson beloved husband of Nancy, devoted father of Rabbi Lauren (Joel Dworkin), Drew and Jake.  He is also deeply mourned by his doting parents, Pearl and Ray Henderson, his loving brother, Steve and his family, and many longtime friends and coworkers.

Mike was born in Spartanburg, South Carolina, and after graduating from medical school at Wake Forest University (where his own father studied, and where he met Nancy in anatomy class), he and Nancy eventually returned to Spartanburg for him to join his family’s medical practice, Orthopedic Associates, where like his father he was an orthopedic surgeon. He loved how things fit together, how joints worked, and he loved being able to fix and help people in this unique way. He was the doctor to the high school football team, the same high school that he and his children attended.

Mike was passionate– a renaissance man with many interests in which he was intellectually immersed, from sports to history to religion to trivia. A friend once told him he knew more useless trivia than anyone, but to him it wasn’t useless. It filled his world with context and meaning, which he shared joyfully. A testament to his love of trivia was that even in his final weeks of life, he had been planning to host a trivia game for Lauren and Joel’s wedding weekend. His son, Lauren’s brother Drew, hosted the game in his memory, allowing 100 of Lauren and Joel’s nearest and dearest to appreciate Mike’s humor and the breadth of his intellectual reach. He loved books and learning. In packing their house to move recently, Nancy described the thousands of books that Mike not just had, but had read. He was the consummate reader and learner.

This love of learning extended to and included Torah. Lauren described him as a true Ohev Yisrael– a person who isn’t Jewish, but who loved the Jewish people--like Moses' father Yitro. She credits her father with the Jewish education of her and her brothers, and her eventual decision to become a rabbi. He loved studying Torah, had read the Hertz Chumash cover to cover, developing familiarity with the commentaries of Rashi, RamBam, and other traditional commentaries (that many Jews aren’t even aware of). He gave divrei Torah at his kids’ b’nai mitzvah, and for a time had a standing date with Lauren on the phone to talk about the weekly parashah. That he grew up Presbyterian and never expressed a desire to convert is a testament to the bigness of his heart and spirit, his comfort with himself and the family he and Nancy created, integrating Jewish tradition in ways he could fully participate in and contribute to. He wanted everyone to be themselves– all parts of themselves, seeming contradictions and all.

Mike was able to remain an eternal optimist, and even throughout his illness, he had hope. He hoped for the best, but was also a pragmatist. He wasn’t scared, wasn’t in denial, didn’t think he was dying, but was prepared for it, and did everything in his power to make sure his family would be cared for. He had a sense of being at peace with God. He will be missed deeply.

The family will hold a private memorial service in Spartanburg, South Carolina on Sunday, July 22nd, just after what would have been Mike's 60th birthday.  However, local shiva will be held at the residence of Rabbi Lauren Henderson and Joel Dworkin on Wednesday, June 27th & Thursday, June 28th from 4:00pm - 9:00pm, with minyan at 7:30pm.

Shiva is an opportunity for you to support mourners with your presence. You don't have to have known the deceased, and you don't even need to know the mourner, to express your condolences and show up for community. If you are able, show up to support Rabbi Lauren and Joel this week.  Things you can do: bring food (vegetarian or kosher, please), hand-written cards (Mike loved hand-written journals and cards), and make a donation to any charity that brings you joy (and do it in Mike Henderson’s memory and let Rabbi Lauren know how her father’s memory is living on).

The Anshe Emet community extends its deepest condolences to Rabbi Lauren, Joel and the entire Henderson family during this difficult time.  May you all be comforted among the mourners in Zion and Jerusalem. Amen.

Our Condolences: Schwartz, Edward H.

It is with deep regret that we inform you that Edward Harold Schwartz died peacefully with Trudy by his side at their home in Rancho Mirage, California at the age of 91 on December 20, 2017. Born on January 5, 1926 in Chicago, Illinois to Sara and Joseph Schwartz.  He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers Richard and Robert Schwartz, his son Daniel Schwartz and his daughter Suzanne Schwartz, and Charlotte G. Schwartz, mother of his children.

Edward lived a long full life and had hoped to make it to celebrate his 92nd Birthday. Eddie grew up in Chicago where he attended the University of Illinois and Roosevelt University. He worked for one of the largest insurance companies in the city on his father’s recommendation. He chose to leave after being recognized for his excellent work, joining his Father’s insurance business. Eddie’s father died suddenly at the age of 54 in 1950 which gave him the responsibility of taking care of the business, Schwartz Brother’s Insurance Agency. Edward married Charlotte Garber Schwartz where they raised their four children in Highland Park, Illinois. His love of tennis and his ability to network and meet people served him well in his business. The business grew to one of the top agencies in the city. He always surrounded himself with talented people. In 1956 Eddie’s younger brother Bob joined him in the business but went on to build his own agency. In the 1960’s Edward and several of his friends formed the Chicago Youth Centers. The number of Centers grew to 14 as well as a summer camp for the under privileged child. This organization is still in existence today under the City of Chicago. In 1983 the AIG Consul, Robert Ungerleiter and Edward formed the Financial Risk Underwriting Agency. They were the largest company to write this type of insurance in the country with offices in Chicago, New York and Arizona.

Edward was responsible for assisting many young people get their start in the insurance business. Edward loved people and always felt great pleasure in being able to give back to those less fortunate or people that had fallen on hard times. These loans were always done on a handshake. He was the ultimate friend. He maintained close friendships throughout his life. During Edward’s 91 years he enjoyed the arts, traveling, fishing, eating at all of the 3-4 star restaurants throughout France, Italy, New York, etc. but in the end he would settle for a good hamburger or hotdog with fries, reading a good book.

Trudy and Edward married in November of 1990, just celebrating their 27 years of marriage. Trudy and Eddie loved their life in Chicago and in Aspen. They then moved to Rancho Mirage when skiing and winter sports were no longer an option. They traded in their skies for full time golf, bridge, and a full social life. Trudy and Eddie loved the desert and made a wonderful life for themselves. Most recently Ed and Trudy took a riverboat cruise on the Danube, knowing that this would probably be the last major trip. Eddie belonged to many social clubs, tennis and golf clubs throughout the years but among the favorites were The Standard Club, Birchwood Tennis Club, North Shore Tennis Club and Maroon Bells, most recently Bryn Mawr Country Club and Tamarisk Golf Club in Rancho Mirage. He always felt at home with a tennis racquet in his hand but in later years settled for a golf club. He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Trudy G. Schwartz, his daughters Jo Ann Schwartz Woodward (John) and Terry Schwartz, nephews and nieces Joe (Marita) Schwartz, Michael (Linda) Schwartz, Duke (Robin) Schwartz, Francine (Larry) Bober, and Jody Schwartz, sister-in-law Jeanne Schwartz, step-sons Jonathan and David Glossberg, step-daughters Julie Kaplan and Jamie Katseff with whom he remained close to until his death, children of his second wife, Marion Sonheim. Our Sincerest Condolences: Honigberg, Joel

It is with deep regret that we inform you of the recent passing of prominent Chicago businessman and patron of the arts, Joel Honigberg. He is survived by his wife, Carol Honigberg, the concert pianist and artistic director of the Pilgrim Chamber Players of Highland Park, four children, including National Symphony cellist Steven Honigberg (Jessica), Janice Honigberg, founder and president of Sun Belle Inc., a major produce marketer and distributor; Robert Honigberg (Susan), a physician and head of medical affairs for a major pharmaceutical company; and Diane Steinberg (Richard), an educator and PhD who is Program Manager/Education Specialist at Stanford University Medical Center. Joel was the adoring and very proud grandfather of Bradley and Jesse Honigberg, Benjamin and Jason Steinberg, Lily and Clara Honigberg, and Julia and David Hedges.

In 1953, Joel Honigberg and Marshall Frankel created J. D. Marshall International, Inc., a pioneering export management company which for 23 years represented American factories from headquarters in Chicago and 19 overseas offices. A subsidiary, Marshall Electronics, pioneered home health kits, becoming the largest seller of consumer blood pressure kits. In 1963 the Company was awarded President Kennedy's E for Excellence in Export Award. After J. D. Marshall was sold to British conglomerate Inchcape in 1979, Joel founded a second export company, JD Honigberg International, which he ran for 26 years until 2013. Joel served as President of the International Trade Club of Chicago and as President of the International Visitors Center. Honigberg developed the concept of Geotrade, a university curriculum to educate Americans for positions in the business of foreign trade. Prior to founding J. D. Marshall International, he worked in his family's diamond trading business in St. Louis, sourcing gems in Antwerp, London, Tel Aviv and New York, and distributing throughout the Midwest. Joel Honigberg was born in St. Louis, MO in 1926. He enrolled at Purdue University in 1943 with the goal of becoming a chemical engineer. He earned spending money doing mechanical drawings on a project for the chemistry department. Some years later he received a certificate from the U.S. government for his contribution to the "Manhattan Project." In 1944, Joel entered the U.S. Navy and became a radar specialist. After an honorable discharge in 1946, Joel obtained his B.S. in Chemistry at the University of Chicago. Financed by the GI Bill of Rights, Honigberg continued his studies in Paris in chemistry at the Sorbonne and in music theory, composition and oboe performance at the Ecole Normale de Musique, where teachers included the composer Arthur Honegger and the conductor Pierre Fournet. Joel's love for music took him to a solo recital by the young pianist Carol Schultz in River Forest in 1955. He introduced himself after the concert, and they were married three months later. Carol's studies at the Eastman School of Music were cut short by a ten week honeymoon (actually an export sales trip), that took the couple to Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Brazil and Venezuela. Joel was an avid concertgoer and long-time governing member of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Among Joel and Carol's most satisfying gifts have been Steinway grand pianos for Symphony Hall and the Ravinia Festival. Joel was a passionate art collector and patron. Self-taught, and relying on dealers and auction houses in New York and Paris, Joel assembled a delightful collection of Impressionist and modern art. He and Carol have donated art to the Art Institute of Chicago and also support the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, the Jewish Museum of New York and the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art. A member of Congregation Beth El in Highland Park, Joel was disciplined and always curious. He studied law at night at DePaul for two years in his 50s, wrote poetry, which he read and published, drew and painted, and practiced and widely read the five languages he spoke fluently. He was a Humanities Visiting Committee member at the University of Chicago and was a board member of the Alliance Francaise of Chicago for some years.

Funeral Services and Shiva have already been held.  In lieu of flowers, the family would be grateful for donations made to the Pilgrim Chamber Players, 805 Moseley Road, Highland Park, IL 60035 or to the Merit School of Music's Honigberg/Hedges Instruments Fund.
