Makhon le-Manhigut:
Anshe Emet’s Leadership Institute

High school students are invited to participate in our Leadership Institute, “Makhon le-Manhigut.” The Makhon le-Manhigut consists of two fundamental building blocks: the Madrikhim Program and Ba-Derekh (“On the Way”), a year-long course in practical Jewish Ethics. Leadership demands a solid moral foundation.

Ba-Derekh
Ba-Derekh, our course in practical Jewish ethics, will provide students with tools for facing the most difficult issues of our time – in high school and beyond.  Rabbis Abe Friedman and David Russo  will work with students to develop an open forum for sharing ideas, concerns, and issues; together with the rabbis, the students will then deepen their understanding of Jewish approaches to pressing moral questions.  Ba-Derekh will be offered in two different formats, allowing students latitude in balancing their work as Madrikhim with their own learning and development: a monthly class, meeting on Sunday mornings, and an intensive class meeting weekly on either Sunday mornings or Tuesday evenings. Topics for Ba-Derekh will grow organically out of class discussion and student suggestions, and will cover key areas of personal growth and development in the teenage years

  • Body Image
  • Drugs and Alcohol
  • Dating and Sexual Ethics
  • Environmental Ethics
  • Israel Advocacy and Anti-Semitism

Madrikhim

Those who choose to serve as Madrikhim will work under the guidance of our Religious School teachers to develop leadership and teaching skills while serving as role models for younger students.  Madrikhim can choose to receive community service hours or a salary for their work in the Religious School; with the addition of Chuggim (e.g., photography, art, music, dance) to the Religious School curriculum, Madrikhim with special skills and interests will have opportunities to share their talents in the course of their work in the Madrikhim program.  The Madrikhim program will include a monthly working lunch in which Madrikhim will work with Religious School teachers to develop programs and activities that the Madrikhim will lead in the coming month.  In order to participate in the Madrikhim Program, students must register for one of the three Ba-Derekh options and meet for orientation with Religious School Principal Leah Conley before placement in a classroom.
